Overview & Critical Summary
Guided by Empyrean Miquella, players cross into the Land of Shadow — a realm obscured by the Erdtree where Queen Marika first set foot. Spanning towering castle keeps, subterranean catacombs, and spectral gravestone plains, this massive expansion redefines FromSoftware's multi-tiered vertical world design.

Masterpiece
9.8/10
“Shadow of the Erdtree is larger, denser, and more punishing than most standalone AAA games. Miyazaki delivers an all-time classic expansion that cements Elden Ring's legendary status.”
The Good (Pros)
- Peerless multi-tiered vertical map exploration that constantly defies spatial logic
- 8 entirely new weapon categories including Martial Arts, Light Greatswords, and Beast Claws
- Spectacular boss encounters with unforgettable choral musical arrangements
- Enthralling lore that sheds light on Marika's tragic origin and Miquella's descent
The Bad (Cons)
- Scadutree Blessing leveling is strictly mandatory to avoid being one-shot by late bosses
- Demanding particle effects during Messmer and Radahn encounters can cause frame drops

Messmer the Impaler is easily top 3 FromSoft bosses of all time. The phase transition music gave me chills. Make sure you collect Scadutree fragments early though — going into Belurat at blessing level 1 was pure suicide haha.
